The Camp is a project to construct an international futuristic campus slated to open in 2016 in Aix-en-Provence.

Extending over 11,000 m², the site will be home to an expertise and training center, an experimentation center, and an accelerator for innovative companies dedicated to the smart city of tomorrow and innovative technologies.

The Camp is an ecosystem devoted to the smart city and inventing the city of tomorrow !

The Camp is a project for constructing an 11,000 m² international campus for digital innovation focusing the cities of the future. It will be built on a 7-hectare tract across from the Sainte-Victoire mountain range and at the heart of the Arbois Mediterranean Environmental Technology Center, in Aix-en-Provence, 15 minutes from the Marseille Provence airport and 5 minutes from the Aix-en-Provence high-speed rail train station.

The inspiration for The Camp came from American campuses where the conditions for creation and innovation are created by promoting interaction between different groups with different profiles and experience: design, marketing and communications students, engineers, coders, doctors, business school graduates and also business executives, entrepreneurs, and world-class experts.

These groups will come live and work on the campus for short, intense periods to think up and experiment with solutions that will make the cities of the future more sustainable, equitable, resilient and humane. The goal of The Camp is to become an ecosystem of connected intelligence, creation and innovation: a global standard.

The Camp ecosystem will focus on 5 central activities :

  • a post-graduate training center for students with diverse profiles who will come to develop their potential for creativity and discovery and become transformative leaders in a complex, technological, and changing world.
  • A training center for preparing managers and executives in the private and public sectors to anticipate how emerging technologies are going to transform their industries, their companies, and their personal and professional development.
  • A acceleration center for startups and growing SMBs that will be supported by expert mentoring teams, which will help them with the development of their projects and their companies.
  • A experimentation center starting in the internal lab, which enables testing for feasibility and fostering feedback on projects. These tests will then be followed by in situ experiments in areas controlled by the authorities of the metropolitan area.
  • The organization of conferences open to the public (amphitheaters and conference rooms with capacities of 500 people), which will be a source of reflection and projection on the issues and innovations connected to the development of urban spaces of the future. These conferences will be led by numerous experts of international status.

The Camp Missions

The conferences, meetings, courses, and other activities will take place in the main pavilion, under a massive 8,000 m² white canvas sheet, a sort of giant dome put in place to protect the venue from the construction being performed outside.

« We wanted to keep this idea of an incubator », explained Corinne Vezzoni, the Marseille native architect who has been entrusted with the construction of The Camp. It will be « a sealed, protected place, which allows eggs or bacteria to develop more quickly. »

Dining services (24/7), on-site accommodation (7,000 m2 of hotel residences consisting of 284 rooms) and athletic venues will round out the site.

Even the construction of a VIP area with a heliport has been planned !

In fact, everything has been thought of in order to provide these digital geniuses with « an environment that is the most comfortable and pleasant as possible, which will place them in an ideal situation to create. »

The campus will host :

  • Number : 100 people per graduating class
  • Length of stay : 4 months, on-site accommodation
  • Source : all over France and abroad.

Startups creators

  • Number : 100 to 120 people
  • Length of stay : 6 months/1 year
  • Accommodation : on site
  • Source : all over France and abroad.

Executives in training

  • Number : up to 70 people
  • Length of stay : 2 to 3 days
  • Accommodation : on site
  • Source: all over France and aboard.

Plus a team of 40 to 50 people.

The Camp will create around 150 direct and indirect jobs in management, administration, site activities and operational and training departments (experts, mentors and trainers).

  • 300 students trained each year
  • 2,000 managers trained each year
  • The goal is achieve to place 100% of the students in jobs or have them start up their own companies by the end of their training
  • Eventually, the acceleration of 20 startups in initial phase, more than 40 growing SMBs per year, primarily through national and international sourcing, but with a possible 10 SMBs from the region each year
  • A significant complementarity with the existing digital tech ecosystem
  • A large contribution to the international visibility and appeal of the territory
  • Attraction of talents, students, and outstanding entrepreneurs
  • Creation of economic value through the companies who set up in the region after their stay at The Camp
  • Creation and dissemination of knowledge
  • Development of high value-added skills

The total budget for this ambitious project opening up at the beginning of 2017 is between 18 and 20 million euros, and among the financial contributors are Microsoft, Airbus Helicopter, Google and others.

Overseen by Frédéric Chevalier, the head of an Aix-based company and founder of the HighCo group (1990), The Camp is one of the iconic projects for the French Tech Aix-Marseille.

Objective : to train more than 300 students and 2,000 international executives per year and support 20 startups and 20 SMBs, which will be set up on site, all of them devoted to fostering innovative solutions for making the city of the future more sustainable and equitable.

The project was officially launched on July 5, 2015, in Aix-en-Provence in the presence of Emmanuel Macron, the Minister of Economy, Industry, and Digital Economy.
